If your carbon sponge is left in the filter for too long, it may release the chemicals again into the water.   Changing the carbon sponge in your filter system every 4 weeks will help ensure your filters culture will be free of chemical impurities.

You should clean or replace one sponge at a time every 2-4 months.   Please remember that the more you change your poly pads the less you'll need to clean the lower portion of your filter.   When cleaning any filter media you should never use tap water and only use water that has come from the same aquarium as the filter.
